Statement from Janssen Evelyn on the Supreme Court Decision Regarding Birthright Citizenship
“Today, the Supreme Court reminded us of a truth that should never have been up for debate: the Constitution means exactly what it says.
The Fourteenth Amendment is not a matter of policy or preference. It is a constitutional guarantee. It declares that if you are born on this soil, you are an American. That is your birthright, and it cannot be undone by the stroke of an executive pen.
I know the weight of that promise firsthand. I was born in Barbados, and I chose to become an American. I had the privilege of raising my kids here knowing that they would grow up with the rights and opportunities enshrined in the constitution. That journey taught me that citizenship is more than a legal status. It is a solemn commitment to democracy and our shared future.
America was built by people who choose to work hard, serve others, contribute, and invest in the promise of this nation. Today's decision reaffirms the fundamental truth that our nation’s strength has never come from narrowing who belongs. It comes from protecting the dignity of every person born here and ensuring that our founding principles are not subject to the politics of the moment.
We are at our best when we honor the rule of law and the promise of equal citizenship. Today, that promise endures.”
