Statement from Janssen Evelyn on the Loss of Alexander LaMorie

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Alexander LaMorie at Patuxent Commons, which is right around the corner from my home. I have been monitoring the situation since it unfolded, and my thoughts are with Alexander’s family, his loved ones, and the many members of our community who are grieving.

I have supported the vision for Patuxent Commons since 2020, when the project was first brought to the Hickory Ridge Village Board during my time serving there. Through years of advocacy alongside partners like the Howard County Autism Society and ARC Howard, we worked to build homes for older adults, people with disabilities, and families needing stability. It is heartbreaking that a place created specifically to foster inclusion and provide support is now connected to such a painful incident.

Through my work in local government, including helping stand up the Office of Police Accountability in Anne Arundel County, I understand that incidents like this must be reviewed through a clear and independent process. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office will conduct that review, and it is vital that it proceed carefully and impartially.

Right now, our focus must remain on a grieving community. As a father and a neighbor, I am holding Alexander’s family, his friends, and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy in my thoughts and prayers.”
